In wastewater treatment processes (such as the activated sludge method), real-time and accurate sludge concentration (MLSS) monitoring is the core of ensuring stable operation of the biochemical system. However, traditional sensors often cause data distortion due to biofilm attachment on the window, optical interference, and frequent maintenance.

The NiuBoL NBL-MLSS-408-S online sludge concentration sensor represents the industrial standard of contemporary water quality monitoring. Based on the infrared 90° scattered light principle, the sensor can effectively filter the influence of water sample color on measurement results. Its integrated structure design highly integrates the optical transmitter, receiver, signal processing, temperature compensation and data conversion modules, directly outputting standard RS485 digital signals or 4-20mA analog signals.

Spatial Layout: To ensure the measurement field is not interfered with by wall reflection, please ensure that the sensor measurement end is >5cm away from the pool side wall and >10cm away from the bottom.
Installation Form: It is recommended to use a 3/4 NPT bracket for submerged installation. The sensor should be vertically downward or at a certain angle to the flow direction to avoid air bubbles staying on the measurement window.
NiuBoL sensors use 5-core high-quality shielded wire with the following wiring definition:
Red wire: Power positive (12~24V DC)
Black wire: Power negative (GND)
Blue wire: RS485-A
White wire: RS485-B
Yellow wire: Current output (4-20mA, dedicated for optional accessories)
Expert Tip: The sensor interface uses an M16 waterproof connector. During outdoor construction, all on-site wiring points must undergo secondary waterproof sealing (such as using waterproof junction boxes or heat shrink tubing) to prevent moisture from siphoning into the device along the cable.
Q1: Can the cleaning brush of NBL-MLSS-408-S be manually controlled?
A: Yes. Through Modbus commands, users can change the interval time of automatic cleaning or send specific commands to perform a single forced cleaning, allowing flexible operation under special working conditions.
Q2: Is the 316L material suitable for strong acid and strong alkali environments?
A: 316L has excellent general corrosion resistance and is suitable for municipal sewage and most industrial wastewater. Q3: What to do if the concentration value displayed by the sensor differs from the laboratory drying method?
A: Sludge concentration measurement is affected by particle shape, color, and homogeneity. It is recommended to take samples at the installation site and use laboratory data as a standard sample to perform "slope calibration" on the sensor to achieve a high degree of consistency.
Q4: Can 4-20mA and RS485 be used simultaneously?
A: The NBL-MLSS-408-S supports RS485 output. 4-20mA is an optional module. If you need to output both signals simultaneously, please specify when ordering.
Q5: What to do if the sensor measurement window is scratched?
A: Our window uses high-hardness pure quartz glass. Under normal use, the cleaning brush will not cause scratches. If severely scratched by external force and affecting light transmittance, the optical component needs to be returned to the factory for replacement.
Q6: What is the maximum cable extension length?
A: In RS485 communication mode, with shielded twisted pair, the transmission distance can reach more than 1000 meters. However, when transmitting over long distances, pay attention to power supply voltage drop. It is recommended to add power supply at the remote end for distances over 200 meters.
Q7: Why choose infrared light instead of blue light or white light?
A: Wastewater usually has color (such as printing and dyeing water). Infrared light has extremely low sensitivity to color, ensuring that the measurement is of particle concentration rather than water color depth, resulting in higher stability.
Q8: Will the device freeze and break in outdoor use in northern winter?
A: As long as the sensor head is submerged in water (water does not freeze), its working temperature range is 0~60℃ and it can operate normally. However, after shutdown or disassembly, it should be stored in an environment of -5~65℃ to prevent internal circuits from being affected by extreme low temperatures.
