Why a Rain Gauge Has No Data or Low Readings: Field Troubleshooting Guide

Time:2026-09-07 16:27:32 Popularity:12

The most important thing to distinguish between rainfall failure is "communication is not responding" and "communication is normal but rainfall is 0". The former is an electrical/protocol issue and the latter goes into the tipping bucket, funnel, installation and rainfall process checks.

Step 1: Read the raw data first

Use the USB-RS485 converter or data collector debugging interface to confirm whether the sensor has a valid Modbus response. If you can't read the address of the device, check the power supply, A/B wiring, baud rate and the address of the device first; if it returns normal but the value is 0, check the mechanical part.

Step 2: Do an artificial dump/pour test

Open the upper cover to confirm that the transport fasteners have been removed, manually flip the tipping bucket or slowly add fresh water. Each dump shall produce a corresponding pulse or numerical change. If the pouring is effective and natural rainfall is low, the electronic part of the sensor is usually not the first suspect.

Step 3: Check installation and blockage

  • Whether the rain inlet is horizontal.
  • Funnels, filters, and outlets are free of leaves, insects, or sediment.
  • Whether the tipping bucket swings freely, not touching the shell or stuck.
  • Whether the site is covered by buildings, tree canopies or strong winds that cause rainfall collection deviations.
  • Whether the platform mixes interval rainfall, minute rainfall and cumulative rainfall.

Step 4: Compare with the same statistical period

It is not possible to directly compare "50mm down local week" with "a register showing 0.7mm" unless it is confirmed that the register is saved for the whole week. Many systems require data collectors to add up each increment to get daily/weekly/monthly cumulative rainfall.
