Why Water Quality pH and EC Sensors Need Calibration

Time:2026-09-07 16:27:33 Popularity:12

Online electrochemical sensors are subject to electrode aging, contamination, temperature and reference system changes, so regular calibration is not "equipment instability", but an important maintenance step to ensure long-term traceability of data.

How to calibrate the pH

Common glass electrode pH sensors are calibrated with one or two point buffer. Two-point calibration usually selects a standard solution that covers the actual working range, such as pH4.01 and 7.00, or 7.00 and 10.01. Rinse with deionized water each time before switching the standard solution to avoid cross-contamination.

How to calibrate EC

The EC sensor uses standard liquid calibration electrode constants and system readings of known conductivity. The standard liquid range should be close to the actual working range, and avoid taking a very low conductivity standard liquid to verify the high salinity range.

Cleanliness is more important than frequent calibration

Electrode surface fouling, oil stains, and biofilms can all cause drift. If difficulty in calibration is found, it should be cleaned as permitted by the probe material before recalibration. Do not use strong acids, hydrofluoric acids or organic solvents at will unless expressly permitted by the product description.

NiuBoL Water Quality Product Selection

NiuBoL online water quality pH, EC and other products support RS485/Modbus, and provide water quality sensor configuration software and pH/conductivity calibration video in the download center to facilitate on-site commissioning and maintenance.

FAQ

Q1: How often do you calibrate?

A1: There is no uniform cycle. Clean water bodies can be appropriately lengthened, high pollution, high temperature or fouling environments should be more frequent, and adjusted according to drift and project quality requirements.

Q2: Is temperature compensation an alternative to calibration?

A2: No. Temperature compensation corrects temperature effects, calibration addresses electrode slope, zero point and system deviation.

Q3: Can the soil pH probe also be calibrated according to this process?

A3: Cannot be applied directly. The structure and calibration methods of soil pH and water quality pH may be different, and should be operated according to the specific model instructions.

Q4: Must the probe be broken if the calibration fails?

A4: Not necessarily. Eliminate the standard solution failure, temperature inconsistency, probe contamination and wiring problems before judging the electrode life.
