 How Visibility Meters Work 

Visibility meters operate on the forward-scatter principle, measuring scattered light at angles less than 90° within the sampling volume to calculate visibility.  

The transmitter emits pulses of near-infrared light at a specific wavelength. The receiver captures forward-scattered light, and an embedded microcontroller uses advanced algorithms to compute the total atmospheric extinction coefficient, which is then converted into Meteorological Optical Range (MOR). 

Unlike transmissometers that require long baselines, scatter-based meters achieve high accuracy over short distances — making them ideal for airports, highways, and ports. Even under complex weather or rapidly changing particle concentrations, forward-scatter signals reliably reflect true visibility.
