Piezoelectric Rain Gauge or Tipping Bucket Rain Gauge: Application Boundaries and Error Sources

Time:2026-09-07 16:27:32 Popularity:17

The two rainfall sensors are not absolutely “advanced” and “backward”, they address different needs. The tipping bucket is closer to the mechanical volume measurement, and the piezoelectricity estimates the rainfall by the impact energy of the raindrops.

Advantages of a tipping bucket

The dump rain gauge corresponds to a fixed volume for each dump, the physical relationship is intuitive, and the long-term cumulative rainfall and project acceptance are relatively easy to explain. The disadvantage is that there is a mechanical mechanism that needs to be kept level, the funnel cleaned and attention paid to freezing at low temperatures.

Advantages and limitations of piezoelectric

The piezoelectric sensor has no tipping mechanism and is compact and suitable for all-in-one equipment. It estimates rainfall through the force/vibration generated by the impact of rain drops, so wind, vibration, dust or other mechanical shocks can cause interference; drizzle and different raindrop profiles can also affect quantitative accuracy.

How to choose

  • The project pays more attention to cumulative rainfall, interpretability and acceptance: priority is given to the tipping bucket.
  • Space constraints, need for integration, sensitivity to maintenance machinery: piezoelectricity can be considered.
  • When the requirements for light rain and quantitative accuracy are high, the measured performance of piezoelectric products should be reviewed.
  • Heating, weighing rain and snow, or special snowfall schemes should be further considered in cold areas.

FAQ

Q1: Why can a piezoelectric rain gauge be valuable without rain?

A1: As long as the sensing element feels sufficient mechanical shock, it may produce a response, so installation on strong vibration structures should be avoided.

Q2: Is piezoelectric rainfall suitable for high-precision scientific research?

A2: It depends on the specific model and the calibration evidence. For projects that require traceable quantitative precipitation, tipping, weighing or standard metering rainfall equipment is often easier to verify.

Q3: Why might piezoelectric rainfall require longer update intervals?

A3: Some algorithms need to identify raindrops and count the impact characteristics within a certain time window. The read frequency and output update logic should be set according to the model protocol.
