The main challenge for weather sensors in marine environments is not waterproofing alone. Salt spray, condensation, ultraviolet exposure, vibration and long-term corrosion act together. A device that works reliably in normal outdoor conditions may still need additional material, connector and enclosure checks before being used for unattended coastal or offshore monitoring.
For a fixed coastal station, wind direction can be aligned to true north during installation. A vessel changes heading continuously, so electronic compass or GNSS heading compensation is often required. Moving platforms must also consider how vessel speed affects relative wind measurement.
Brackets, fasteners, connectors and circuit boards should be evaluated for salt-spray corrosion risk. Stainless steel, weather-resistant plastics, conformal coating and sealed connectors can improve suitability, but projects that require marine-grade certification or a specified salt-spray test duration should confirm the relevant test basis before procurement.
Long-term 95%RH exposure is not the only risk. Condensation caused by day-night temperature changes can enter connectors or create leakage paths on PCB surfaces. Ventilation, sealing and anti-condensation design for the enclosure are therefore as important as the sensor protection rating.
For fixed coastal stations and vessel wind measurement, engineers can evaluate the NiuBoL NBL-W-21GUWS ultrasonic wind speed and direction sensor or the NBL-W-71GUWS 7-in-1 ultrasonic weather sensor. Long-term offshore projects should still be configured according to salt-spray exposure, material requirements, heading compensation, mounting structure and maintenance conditions.
Q1: Can IP65 equipment be used near the sea?
A1: It can be used for general outdoor rain protection, but long-term coastal applications must also consider salt-spray corrosion and condensation.
Q2: Why is wind direction measurement on a vessel different from a fixed station?
A2: Because vessel heading changes, the sensor's relative wind direction must be converted to a geographic coordinate system.
Q3: Does conformal coating make a sensor marine-grade?
A3: No. Conformal coating can reduce the effect of moisture and salt spray on the PCB, but marine suitability also depends on materials, connectors, mechanical structure and test standards.
