Online water quality monitoring doesn't end with a few probes tied together. Different indicators use different measuring principles, installation methods, maintenance cycles and compensation requirements are also different, the system design should take into account the water body, flow rate, pollution level and cleaning conditions.

What is an online water quality monitoring system

An online water quality monitoring system continuously collects water body data through pH, EC, ORP, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and other sensors, and then stores, is stored, uploaded, analyzed and alarmed through the collector and communication module. Compared with manual sampling, it is more suitable for detecting short-term fluctuations and continuous changes, but it still requires standardized installation, cleaning, calibration, and quality control in conjunction with laboratory methods in demanding projects.

What are the five common parameters?

  • pH: Reflects acidity and alkalinity, commonly used glass electrode method.
  • EC: Reflects the overall conductivity level of ions in water and can assist in judging salinity/TDS changes.
  • ORP: Reflects the redox state of the water body.
  • DO: Key parameters for dissolved oxygen, aquaculture and wastewater treatment.
  • Turbidity: Reflects the level of suspended particles by light scattering.

Why multi-parameter systems are more valuable

A single parameter often fails to account for changes in water quality. For example, a decrease in DO may be due to an increase in temperature, algal/microbial changes, or an increase in organic load; an increase in EC may be due to a change in salinity or industrial emissions. Multi-parameter time series can help determine the cause of the change.

System Structure

The sensor is connected to the collector via RS485/Modbus, where data is recorded periodically and uploaded via 4G, Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Long-term unattended projects can use self-cleaning multi-parameter probes to reduce the maintenance frequency caused by biofouling.

Confirm the condition of the water body before selecting the type

Freshwater, seawater, sewage, industrial pipelines and aquaculture tanks have different ranges, materials and maintenance requirements. In particular, EC/salinity, turbidity and pressure installation should choose the appropriate range according to the actual medium.

A1: It is necessary to look at the protection and materials of the specific model. Online water quality probes usually support immersion, but terminals, transmitters, and connectors should still be waterproof.

Q2: Can a system be connected to sensors of different brands?

A2: If the collector supports its electrical interface and communication protocol, it can be integrated, but the registers, power supply, and data format should be verified one by one.

Q3: Which is better, multi-parameter integrated probes or multiple single probes?

A3: The installation and maintenance of the integrated probe is more centralized; the independent probe is easier to select different ranges and replace individually according to the parameters.
