Wind speed and direction sensors seem to be just "wind gauges", but mechanical, two-dimensional ultrasound and three-dimensional ultrasound face different applications. When selecting the type, first ask: Is it conventional ground wind, relative wind on the mobile platform, or scientific three-dimensional turbulence?
Wind speed and direction sensors are used to continuously measure the speed and direction of air movement, and are the basic sensors in automatic weather stations, agricultural monitoring, ports, traffic, wind power, and environmental monitoring. According to the measurement structure, it can be divided into mechanical type, two-dimensional ultrasonic wave and three-dimensional ultrasonic wave: mechanical type is measured by wind cup and wind vane motion, and ultrasonic type calculates the wind field according to the difference in the propagation time of sound waves in different directions.
The cup anemometer converts the wind speed through the speed of the wind cup, and the wind vane obtains the direction through the mechanical corner. They are intuitive in structure and clear in maintenance, suitable for conventional agrometeorology, environmental monitoring and general engineering stations. Long-term use of mechanical parts may be affected by bearing wear and starting wind speed.
The two-dimensional ultrasonic wave uses the difference in the propagation time of the ultrasonic wave in different directions to calculate the horizontal wind speed and wind direction. No mechanical moving parts, suitable for long-term outdoor, low maintenance and integrated weather sensors.
The NiuBoL NBL-W-21GUWS ultrasonic wind speed and direction sensor is a two-dimensional ultrasonic scheme, adopting a non-mechanical moving part structure, providing an RS485/Modbus interface, suitable for automatic weather stations, agriculture, port, traffic and industrial environmental monitoring.
Three-dimensional ultrasound can obtain the wind component in the X/Y/Z direction, which is more suitable for turbulence, flux, boundary layer and wind engineering research. Its value is not just "one more direction", but it can analyze the vertical wind and three-dimensional airflow structure.
Q1: Is ultrasound necessarily more accurate than mechanical?
A1: Not necessarily. The specific accuracy depends on the model specification and calibration, the main advantages of ultrasound are no mechanical wear, fast response and high integration.
Q2: Is the three-dimensional anemometer suitable for ordinary agricultural weather stations?
A2: Generally not necessary unless the project requires vertical wind or turbulence studies.
Q3: Is the mechanical wind direction and the ultrasonic wind direction the same as the installation direction?
A3: Not necessarily. Different structures have different zero-position marks and should be oriented according to the arrows of the corresponding model or the installation instructions.
