The biggest difference between a fixed weather station and a mobile platform is that the “north does not change” after the fixed station is installed, while vehicles and ships continue to change their course. As a result, the same wind direction sensor handles orientation differently in both scenarios.
Two-dimensional ultrasonic wind speed and direction sensors usually have directional arrows or zero position markings. When installing, use the compass, mobile compass tool, or measuring instrument to align the designated mark with true north/magnetic north and record the deviation according to the project requirements. Once the installation is complete, the sensor is no longer moving and there is no need to continuously measure the heading.
When the sensor is mounted on a vehicle, ship, or mobile robot, the sensor coordinate system rotates with the platform. At this time, only the wind direction angle is not enough to obtain the real wind direction under the geographical coordinate system, which requires real-time correction of electronic compass, GNSS heading or inertial navigation information.
Offshore installation is more than “add an electronic compass”. Salt spray, persistent high humidity, ultraviolet light, vibration, connectors and fastener materials are also evaluated. IP65 can only describe the ability to prevent dust and water spray, and is not a substitute for marine corrosion resistance.
Keep as far away as possible from masts, walls, radar antennas, and structures that alter airflow. If it cannot be completely avoided, at least record the installation geometry to avoid mistaking the structural turbulence for a real wind field.
Q1: Do fixed weather stations have to have built-in electronic compasses?
A1: Usually not. Just make sure the orientation marks are correctly facing north when installing.
Q2: Why do I have to deal with the heading on board?
A2: Because the "0°" direction of the sensor itself changes after the hull steering, the real wind direction in the geographical sense cannot be obtained without compensation.
Q3: Can radar and ultrasonic wind sensors be mounted on the same rod?
A3: It is mechanically possible, but the distance should be kept as far as possible and electromagnetic interference and structural occlusion should be evaluated, especially for high-power radar equipment.
